PC Authority ties GTA IV and Saints Row 2

Australian PC Authority tied GTA IV and Saints Row 2  as #1 console game of 2008.

A tough call, this one. GTAIV is undoubtedly the more technically proficient title, and one that absolutely drips character and cohesive story line. But Saints Row 2 drips playability, does more with the "sandbox" concept, and lets you play as a morbidly obese transvestite in charge of a sewage truck gone amuck. GTAIV would win the Oscar, but we feel Saints Row 2 would probably edge it out for a Most Popular Logie award, and on that basis, we’re stuck between the two.

  1. GTA IV and Saints Row 2 (PS3/360)
  2. LittleBigPlanet (PS3)
  3. Super Smash Bros Brawl (Wii)
  4. De Blob (Wii)
  5. Braid (360)

1UP interview with Chinatown Wars developer

We’ve tried to make this game a much more arcadey experience. We wanted to have nearly all of the gameplay play out onscreen in a visceral way. Taking the cops out in any way you can, fit this goal perfectly. It feels really cool to ram another car into a tree, or if you’re good enough, force it over a ramp and into the sea. While playing, some of the guys here have managed to bail out of their car whilst jumping a ramp, having the car blow up a police helicopter in midair — these are the kind of moments game designers and players alike love.

GTA: Chinatown Wars will be a Nintendo DS exlcusive and is currently scheduled to be released in Q2 2009 (before the end of April).

New NVIDIA drivers and GTA IV PC patch info

NVIDIA recommends that you update your system with the GeForce v180.84 driver for the best experience on Grand Theft Auto IV.

ATI plans to release Catalyst 8.12 on December 10th.

Rockstar Toronto posted on GTAForums.com about the patch:

Patch Is On The Way
We are working on making a patch available in the next few days. Since Grand Theft Auto IV is a Games For Windows – Live game the patch must be certified by Microsoft before release. The patch is already at Microsoft and we expect a speedy approval. The patch contains a variety of fixes including:

A fix to the crash after legal screen that some German customers were reporting.

Numerous improvements to the video editor: Smarter naming of videos, improved rendering quality, better fx during replays

Fix to bowling while using certain sensitive mice

Fix for ATI 1900 shadows

Overall savings to memory

Graphic improvements to particle systems and mirrors

Multiplayer character settings are preserved

Support for DirectInput controllers. Note: The current hack way of supporting these controllers may not work with the improved functionality. So we recommend you remove the hack before upgrading to the patch.
