Petition for GTA2 source

Message to Rockstar Games:

It has been over a decade since GTA2 was released. It would be great publicity for Rockstar Games to release the GTA2 source code and it can only help improve the game. GTA2 has already been released for free, so releasing the code can’t hurt sales.

We can understand that there might be some parts of the code that would need to be removed for licensing reasons but the fans will be able to replace those parts with an open source alternative. Any small parts of the code would be useful including the mission scripts, the map editor source code or the script compiler source.

We would prefer the code to be public but if you must restrict it to certain people, there are skilled fans out there, who would be willing to sign NDAs and work on patches to GTA2 for free. Any feedback on why parts of the code haven’t been released would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you for your time and for creating such fun and brilliant games.

Contact Rockstar Games by any means possible and ask them nicely to release the code!

  1. If Rockstar has licensed the GTA1/2 engine to another company, they may be legally prohibited from releasing the source code. Thats a possibility.

  2. Man they need to release the source it could help give small developers a start on games and open great modding opportunities
