Custom Menu in GTA2

Hi there!
I've been experimenting with GTA2 modding, and I got to the part when I want to change the menu. I managed to open the menu's .tga files in GIMP, but now when I put the edited files in the game, the edited part of the menu is pitch black in-game. Do I need to save the file as some special format and rename it to .tga? Or do I need to do something else?
