Desktop video recording
Re: Epic GTA2 Map Editor (0.6.0) Beta
Use CamStudio with some fine codec, like DivX or XVid.
Camstudio is freeware and i use it for my videos on YT.
Just use higher FPS, then videos shouldn't lag.

i've seen your videos, and they all are like 5fps... are you sure CamStudio will work for me who wants at least 30fps?B-$hep wrote:Use CamStudio with some fine codec, like DivX or XVid.

Edit: i dled it and works fine, but i would like to know why your videos are so laggy then?

I just forgot to increase the frame rate in the settings. It was on default: 5
The other videos hopefully will not be so laggy.
EDIT: thanks for watching, whatever the purpose was.

Re: Epic GTA2 Map Editor (0.6.0) Beta
i retract my previous statement about "its working fine", i get 5fps too... no matter what settings i put, it worked fine with a small resolution like 320x240 etc.
Edit: heres my settings:
what im doing wrong? the ffdshow codec is the famous H.263+

Re: Epic GTA2 Map Editor (0.6.0) Beta
I tried this way.
But still, seems laggy or too fast, dunno, just not nice.
better than 5 FPS but still not so good (at least for me)
Maybe it's my poor old graphics card: ATI radeon 2550, 256MB.
EDIT
Burn the Camstudio.
Use Hypercam, i did few quick tests and it does much better work.
With default settings video looks alot better.

Re: Epic GTA2 Map Editor (0.6.0) Beta
wow that thing installed some toolbar on my browser without asking me anything... i can only hope theres no more surprises...
argh... i still cant make it to record 30fps, it makes the video playback speed 2x faster every time, no matter what fps settings i put.
and i can only record 2-4 minutes, after that the video doesnt work anymore, only sound .
btw which video encoder you use?

Just disable the toolbar. I didn't know also and i just disabled in Firefox.
How you determine if it's recording at 30 fps or not?
I didn't even messed with encoder, just let the Hypercam to choose it automatically (Autoselect).
But i prefer XVid MPEG-4, because it has clear picture, at the same time, AVI is small.

Re: Epic GTA2 Map Editor (0.6.0) Beta
well, the automatic selection gave me the worst possible encoder, microsoft crap with almost uncompressed frames etc.
well, that wasnt the problem, but i can see its smooth, so i assume its 30fps, the problem was: the video playback rate is 2x faster ! did you solve this, how?B-$hep wrote:How you determine if it's recording at 30 fps or not?

Dunno, if i put there 30, then the video is fast like crazy.
6 just worked for me and gave me smooth rotation in video of my editor scene.
So this 6 is just guesswork.
With 30 in that box, for me it's almost impossible to see anything normally at that speed.
Dunno, if nothing helps or works.
Video can be made slower with VirtualDub.
I should make some test video and upload to YT, to see, is it smooth or not.
On my HDD everything is smooth, but as i upload to YT, it's laggy.

Use h.264 (x264 is the open source and award winning implementation of it). It's the best. ffdshow will give you x264 encoding support. Everyone should install ffdshow, noone should use codec packs.B-$hep wrote:But i prefer XVid MPEG-4, because it has clear picture, at the same time, AVI is small.
If you want to record screencasts, recording straight to h.264*, xvid, divx, wmv, mjpeg, vorbis or whatever is The Wrong Way of doing it. The initial dump should be written to a very-low or zero-compression file during recording so that your CPU can focus on the application being recorded, not on compression of the video on the fly. Once you're done recording, the video can then be recoded using a very high quality very high compression codec, such as h.264 with a veryslow profile
*Now when I said you shouldn't use h.264 (x264) for the initial dump I was assuming most readers don't know about the profiles available for h.264. Indeed you can use it for the initial dump, but be sure to use the ultrafast profile.
Re: Epic GTA2 Map Editor (0.6.0) Beta
DrSlony, I downloaded the newest ffdshow, but I cant find the h264 there, i selected MJPEG encoder but where do i select h264 ? and where do i select the "veryslow" and "ultrafast" profiles? and do i need to use "ultrafast" if i have 4 cpu cores? also isnt it pointless to re-encode "ultrafast" compression again with "veryslow" profile since the quality has already been degraded to "ultrafast" quality? Also, I dont think i can record uncompressed on my harddrive if i want to make at least 1280x720 resolution recordings (max 30-60MBps write). So what do you suggest for "very-low" compression codec? what screen recording software you recommend for windows ?
