Google Summer of Code 2013

Post by Sektor »

I'm thinking of submitting GH to to GSoC. College/uni students can get paid by google to improve GSoC projects. It's unlikely GH will be accepted but I figure it's worth a try. Students really shouldn't be using VB6 any more but one of the goals could be converting GH to a free and portable language. Documentation and tutorials can also be goals.

I'll have to create an ideas list in a similar format to this: http://community.kde.org/GSoC/2011/Ideas

I have 3 idea/todo lists that need updating and merging. There might some things on those lists that are already in GH.
http://gtamp.com/GTA2/todo.txt
http://gtamp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2
https://code.google.com/p/gta2-game-hunter/issues/list

There are other GTA2 tools/projects that would make for better GSoS submissions.

Like the Dutch saying goes: "Niet geschoten is altijd mis." Literal Translation: "Not [having] shot is always missed".

Does my map editor count also?
Although it's in Pascal. I never posted it current status here on forums because there will be no interest but anyway..

You should port GH to FreePascal for example. Very easy to create GUI and language is simple enough with lot's of nice VCL components. VB should go rest forever. It's simple language but that's it. Poor or no support for lot's of things.
Always wear safety glasses while programming.

Most GCoS projects are well established/already popular. Usually more popular than GH.

FPC would be much better than VB6 but I haven't used Pascal for over a decade. I'm open to any portable language but I'd prefer C/C++. I'd also like to see a mostly web based GH like this: http://snoop.worms2d.info/. The exe part would just need to detect when GTA2 is hosting, handle the registry writes, launch GTA2, post data to a web site and map updating would be nice.

We'll begin accepting proposals from open source mentoring organizations on March 18, 2013 at 19:00 UTC; we'll stop accepting organization proposals on March 29th at 19:00 UTC
So I have about a week to write ideas list/project proposal, if I can be bothered.

edit: I missed the deadline, so maybe next year :)
