XP calc.exe was infected and Anti-Malware deleted that. So extracted new one from XP cd.
And your editor works fine, no crashes, floating point errors, no need to unpack after each session.
I think i know what thing was infected. But i don't want to test it atm.
Too tired.
I think you should give up on XP and go for a newer windows. XP is not being updated any more and the target of most virus/trojan because it is old and has lots of leaks. For most newer windows you can also select non-fancy mode, which is just the win2000/XP theme. I also suggest running anti-virus and firewall software. Newer windows has windows firewall (free) and you can get some good anti-software for free too. Like AVG and Antivir. If your pc can handle it, I would suggest that you run a virtual machine/pc and download/view on that machine stuff you don't trust. If the virtual machine gets a nasty virus, no problem, just reset it or reinstall it. Your real pc will stay healthy and also the programs you make and share with us.

Antivirus software and Windows are like taking aspirin after having sex with a bird you just met at the pub. In Nigeria. Except that AIDS can't turn you into a zombie.
Good suggestion about the virtual machine though.

I got a whole heap of security updates for XP just a couple of days ago.
See the
Microsoft End of Support website.
XPsp3 will probably continue until 2013 because it is the only productive version of Windows for office workers.
(These messages should probably be split to a separate thread?)

OK its done now, i went through all the 52 sounds and checked their ranges one by one inside gta2 by moving my character until the sound was heard. they are pretty accurate now, only thing that makes them inaccurate is that the spheres rendering is blocky:

easy to spot sound range bugs, there should be two sound sources here!

how far will the alarm be heard? pretty far.
i might fix the biggest spheres to render with better resolution... and the spheres colors kinda looks ugly too. but at least its useful since you see the area easily where the sound is played because it renders it whiter than the area where its not heard.
note: the spheres will be displayed only when you select the sound objects.

Forgot to mention, i found also 8 sounds among those 52 sounds that had no sound coming from them:
Code: Select all
WIND
SKID
WORKSHOP
PRISON
PRISON_YARD
SHOPPING_MALL
CROWD_NOISE
GENERATOR_LOSE_POWER
if that helps anyone.

lolz, i found out there is not 3d sounds in gta2, its all 2d! am i right? i tried to enable 3d sounds, but the sound range testing script didnt work as expected: i was able to hear a sound that was set high on sky, whereas the sphere range shows i shouldnt be able to hear it.

It's all 3D... just listen to the cars!

i mean the SOUND objects. for example:
you will hear the sound excatly at that point where the editor shows its range now. if it was 3d sound, the range would be spherical, which it obviously isnt.
also i dont believe the cars would be 3d either... how did you test this?

if you start downtown map and walk down, you will see cars going from right side of the screen to the left, you also hear this effect. first the engine sound is on the right speaker - than slowly going to the left speaker. that is in my "eyes" 3D sound.

The effect you hear is called stereo sound.
It's still 2d sound, even though it sounds "real". When you think if the map was 10000x larger in every axis, would you still hear the cars that are 1000 miles below you? not in 3d sound system, but in 2d sound system you still would hear them, unless you move in X/Y away from the cars.

Yes, sounds are cylindrical. Drawing the cylinder so it's only as high as GTA2's in-game z-axis is a good visualisation.
Pyro and I wrote a list of
GTA2 sounds with descriptions. Measuring the actual ranges is very cool, though. Some sound files seem to have different sounds and ranges for the same entries, though. So you may need 3 distance tables, one for each original
.sty file.
Measurements of proximity used by AI sometimes make this mistake. Like they'll try to find a route to a player high on roof edge instead of a player who is low but further away. Usually they get it right, apart from slopes are always very glitchy for them.

so what youre saying is that some sounds used with SOUND command might be a different sound with bil/wil/ste sound files ?

have you actually tested this? i know there are some different sounds in those files, but is it really that the sounds we can use with SOUND command vary between these 3 files? i dont think any sane developer would make it that way, as they share the sound names... imagine BANK_ALARM was actually FUNNY_FARM on some other sty file

who said DMA Design/R* North developers are sane?
Anyways I know at least one sound is different between two files: waterfall sound (used in DDV's fountain) is different in ste.sdt where it actually sounds like the firetruck cannon, just check SFX_WATER_STREAM on both .sdt files and you'll notice they're different

o.m.g.
why DMA, why...
well, i better go for another 2 rounds of check fest... although, i dont believe the sound ranges would differ.

Another news:
I'm going to change this editor name.
Suggestions?! NOW!
I was thinking:
Epic GTA2 Map Editor
maybe too lame?
Naming notes:
- the name must include GTA2 in it, and preferably map/editor too.
- the name cannot refer to my nickname in any way.
- the name cannot have special chars, such as dot.
- the added name prefix or suffix or whatsoever should be preferably only 1 word long.
- shorter name = better!

Perhaps...
GTA2 Map Editor 2011 Edition (or whatever year it is finally released properly)
Or...
GTA2 Map Editor Revised Edition
Any progress with actually making the block editor then?

Short name: T.M GTA2 Map Editor.
Too long: GTA2 Map Editor [T.M Edition].
I also would like to know about block editing.
It would be nice to see at least some screenshots.

I try to avoid long names now

but those gave good idea... "GTA2 Map Editor SE" XD (like win98 se...)
Pyro wrote:Any progress with actually making the block editor then?
nope, but whats the hurry? doesnt dma editor work good enough? i dont think anyone would use my version anyways since people arent even using the epic script editor AFAIK. (except elypter and sektor and gustavob). so its not motivating me enough to actually do some other editor nobody will use.

i also try to avoid my nick in it XD also it shouldnt have any special chars such as dots etc.
