Merry Xmas!

Post by BenMillard »

Looks like everyone has spent some time away from the forum, hopefully spending it with family and friends.

Sadly my laptop is unwell and forgot everything I ever installed or made on it. Most recent backup was 17th November 2012 so not much will be lost. Need to cure the illness before I risk connecting it to the external backup drive...Malwarebytes finds nothing wrong.

A seasonal mystery to keep me busy.

How are you guys keeping busy? I've been staying with my family the whole week.

My parents bought a place in the country, so I went there for a few days.

I went to the top of a viewing tower on a nearby mountain and saw this:

GOURANGA! I just can't escape GTA.

I wish you all a happy new year! No? Too soon?

How about some penguins then?

Was the mountain not tall enough already?! :D

Tech support are gradually recovering files but a lot of applications and settings will be laborious to put right. It's going to be quite a while until my laptop is really operational again.

First time in 15 years that a virus has altered anything important on any computer I own.

Happy New Year!

I'm still recovering data from the disk before restoring it to a November 2012 backup.

At least another week left.

Good news, everybody! Just about back to normal.

My archived e-mails have proved the hardest to repair. All the entries are present but most of the content is garbage. Some of the original text survives between random data and broken formatting.

GTA to-do lists were in my e-mail. A lot of ideas and reported bugs are lost along with some website updates I'd drafted. Fairly minor and replaceable...in fact a lot of my bug reports go in a notepad so I can scribble them during games.

I did recover all the GTA stuff I've made, including the past versions. All my websites were in a backup from November 2011 and I downloaded the stuff I remember changing during December 2012.

So all in all, relatively unscathed. It has taken 3 solid weeks of painstaking work to retrieve almost 15 years of work, hobbies and memories. Time well spent on both counts, imho.

Yes good that you got most of it back. At least I don't have to worry about losing emails if my hard drive dies since gmail backs all that up.
